Open Call - Aspect Vol.19: Communication

ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art, a biannual DVD publication, is currently accepting submissions of time-based work for V19: COMMUNICATION.

As the tools of communication continue to evolve, so does language itself. As globalization expands our notion of community and networked culture shrinks the boundaries between public and private, the strategies through which we communicate are thrown into question. In light of this questioning, we are looking for media artworks that address language and communication as their primary subjects. We will review installation, video, performance, sound and any other work best documented in time-based format.

ASPECT asks artist/commentator pairs to submit proposals of time-based work. Commentators may be curators, historians, critics, or educators who can offer a distinct perspective on the work. Criteria for selection will include the qualifications of the commentator and the quality of the work. Audio recordings of the commentary will be assembled after the submissions have been selected.

Submissions must include:

- Video documentation (less than 15 minutes in length)
- A brief (100 word) statement regarding the submitted work
- Resume of the artist, resume of commentator
- Contact information for the commentator and artist
- Brief notes outlining the proposed commentary w/ respect to theme
- Submissions must be received by August 1, 2011, sent to*:

About the project Radio As an Arts Space

The title that defines the activities of art project radioCona – a temporary radio station for contemporary arts intentionally bears the name of the space Radio As An Art Space. A project with such a name forms and structures exhibiting of contemporary art works that fall into the fields of radio art and sound art.
Radio As An Arts Space investigates the possibilities of a constitution of an international radio project model for artistic contents and exchange of audio works. Our aim is to stimulate discourse about the production of radiophonic art projects and discursive artistic contents among expert audiences, artists, and art organisations. The project Radio As An Arts Space will examine how a radio frequency can become a gallery space for contemporary art and analyse the constitution of a format of temporary radio broadcasting, as one of the options.

Animate OPEN: Digitalis - call for submissions

Animate Projects - the champion of experimental animation – is delighted to announce its first online exhibition selected from an open submission.

The Animate OPEN is part of Digitalis, a strand of activities throughout 2011 that sets out to explore, question, subvert or confound our expectations of art and the 'digital'. And that includes 'anti-digital' - handmade, physically crafted animation.

The selected films will be presented online at animateprojects.org, from July 2011, accompanied by interviews with the artists. The films will also be featured in the Digitalis publication and at Digitalis events later in the year.

Gary Thomas, Director of Animate Projects says: 'We hope that the inaugural Animate OPEN will prove to be a platform bursting with experiment, to inspire and provoke discussions around creativity and the digital. And we are looking forward to discovering some awe inspiring stuff.'
The Animate OPEN Jury will select up to ten films for exhibition and there will be two cash prizes - one awarded by the Jury (£1000), and an Audience prize (£300) voted for by visitors to the exhibition.

The Jury members are Francesca Gavin, writer, curator and Visual Arts Editor at Dazed & Confused; Rebecca Shatwell, Director, AV Festival; Gary Thomas, Director, Animate Projects; and artist and music video director, David Wilson.
