(Eugene, OR.) Eugene's Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) announces its tenth annual OpenLens Short Film Competition. This event provides an opportunity for Oregon resident filmmakers to showcase their short films of 15 minutes or less in a competitive event. The festival screening and awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, February 1st. DIVA FILMS AT EUGENE CELEBRATION

DIVA: YouthVisions and OpenLens- DIVA offers award-winning films from its two annual short film festivals.  These works are taken from the statewide 9th annual OpenLens Short Film Festival and the 2013 Teen Video Challenge accepting work from Lane County Youth.

Shaggy Dog Project: Local film makers present a panel discussion on the Shaggy Dog Project, an educational filmmaking cooperative whose mission is to guide aspiring local filmmakers through the process of writing and producing short dramatic or humorous films, using professional filmmaking techniques.  Clips from current projects will be shown to illustrate the "learn by doing" approach.

DIVA MAY - JUNE EXHIBIT


Spring Illuminations: The Lane County Artists Juried Show

The Lane County Artists Juried Show was a very popular exhibit during the days of the "original" High and 2nd Ave New Zone Gallery in the 1980s. DIVA has adopted this show, juried by Kathleen Caprario, Analee Fuentes and Marina Hajek.

This exhibition “Spring Illuminations”, features original artwork by Lane County artists Victoria Biedron, Daphne Cox, Tara Kemp, Zoe LeCompte, Cameron O’Hair, Taylor Richmond, Andrea Ros, Sally Schwader, and Bryan Yost. 

An Opening Artist Reception will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013, 5:30 – 8 p.m., and is one of the official stops of the First Friday ArtWalk, hosted by Debbie Williamson-Smith, Communications Manager for the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the University of Oregon campus. 

“Spring Illuminations” is on view through June 22nd. DIVA Gallery hours are 1-5PM Thursday-Saturday.

DIVA'S BEHIND THE LENS SEMINAR - SPRING

The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) hosts "Behind the Lens", a weekly film seminar that explores the relationship between classic feature films and the culture in which they appeared. The Seminar is offered to the community in collaboration with the University of Oregon Arts and Administration and Academic Extension programs.

Each week a single film is screened and discussed.  The host, Tom Blank, is a retired film and television director, who brings illuminating insights to the history of Hollywood and International film production.

All film screenings include a lecture, discussion and question and answer period.  The duration of each session varies by the length of the film. Screenings take place at the UO Baker Center at 7:00 PM located at 325 East 10th Street, Eugene. Free parking on site. The Lane County Juried Show was a very popular exhibit during the days of the "original" High Street and 2nd Ave New Zone Gallery in the 1980s. DIVA has adopted this show and will hold its first exhibit in May at DIVA.

The Jury: Bob DeVine, Kathy Caprario, & Kacey Joyce are this year's jurors.

Submissions: All submissions will be done electronically.

Image specifications:

1.Dimensions: 1920 pixels on the longest side
2.File Format: Save all images as BASELINE Standard JPEG. Do not save as a Progressive JPEG.
3.File Size: JPEGs must be under 1.8 MB.
4.Color space: Save images in an RGB color space, preferably sRGB.

Because of space limitations we are interested in 2 & 3-D work that will fit into DIVA's small gallery.

RESERVE THIS DATE – SATURDAY, JANUARY 26TH!


Ninth Annual OpenLens Festival is a celebration of the independent spirit in Oregon filmmaking. This year’s event features a film critic seminar, a meet-the-filmmaker public reception, film screenings, and a closing reception and awards ceremony. The Saturday, January 26th Festival, hosted by DIVA, will be held in the UO Baker Center Auditorium at 320 E. 10th Street in Eugene.

This is the third year the Short Film/Video Competition has accepted films from across the entire state of Oregon. As the name suggests, it’s an “open” festival, with submissions from both emerging filmmakers and professionals. This year’s selections include: drama, comedy, documentary, thrillers, experimental film, and animation.

The awards ceremony will follow the evening screening and include a reception with food and refreshments provided by A Sweet Life Patisserie. Catering provided by Flavors Catering. The juried awards are for Best of Show ($500) and Honorable Mention ($250). The Audience Favorite award is for $100. Voting will take place immediately after the screening.

Seminar

Screenplay Reading at Wildish Theater


DIVA will host, for the first time in the Eugene-Springfield area, a live dramatic reading of an original feature length screenplay from 7-10PM on Wednesday, January 23rd at the Wildish Theater in Springfield.

Local screenwriters, Desiree Stratford and Al Kline, wrote “AAARRRRRRGH!” an outrageous interpretation of the real life adventures of pirate women Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed with Captain “Calico” Jack Rackam, who were sentenced to hang in 1720.

The free admission presentation will showcase some of the area’s most talented actors and actresses, including Emmy award winner, Mark Lewis. A Q&A session will follow the performance. The play is rated “RRRRRRRRRRR!!!!” for strong adult language.

WORKSHOP: Art Smarts - January 26th


Art Smarts is a workshop for grandparents, parents and teachers who want to encourage creativity and artistic awareness in children. You will learn a vocabulary to teach children about their art, and a way to talk to them about the merits of their art. When they ask, "Is this good?" you will have the words to talk about their strengths and their specific style of creativity. You will also take with you ideas for art projects that you have tried yourself. Most materials will be provided. In addition, you will receive a short materials list at the first class.

The workshop will meet from 1-4 PM over four Saturday sessions: January 26th, February 2nd, 9th, and 16th and will be held at DIVA 280 W. Broadway. An advanced registration fee is $45 is required and mailed by check to DIVA, PO Box 10855, Eugene 97440. Deadline: Monday, January 21st.

The workshop is taught by Kay King who holds a B.A. in fine art from Seton Hill University and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon. For 30 years she has taught various subjects, including art, in Eugene area schools. She is an artist who currently works in encaustics.
