The project Radio As An Arts Space will examine how a radio frequency can become a gallery space for contemporary art and analyse the constitution of a format of temporary radio broadcasting, as one of the options.

Animate OPEN: Digitalis - call for submissions

Animate Projects - the champion of experimental animation – is delighted to announce its first online exhibition selected from an open submission.

The Animate OPEN is part of Digitalis, a strand of activities throughout 2011 that sets out to explore, question, subvert or confound our expectations of art and the 'digital'. And that includes 'anti-digital' - handmade, physically crafted animation.

For the Animate OPEN, Animate Projects is looking for experimental works by UK-based artists, animators and filmmakers. The selected films will be presented online at animateprojects.org, from July 2011, accompanied by interviews with the artists. The films will also be featured in the Digitalis publication and at Digitalis events later in the year.

Gary Thomas, Director of Animate Projects says: 'We hope that the inaugural Animate OPEN will prove to be a platform bursting with experiment, to inspire and provoke discussions around creativity and the digital. And we are looking forward to discovering some awe inspiring stuff.'
The Animate OPEN Jury will select up to ten films for exhibition and there will be two cash prizes - one awarded by the Jury (£1000), and an Audience prize (£300) voted for by visitors to the exhibition.

The Jury members are Francesca Gavin, writer, curator and Visual Arts Editor at Dazed & Confused; Rebecca Shatwell, Director, AV Festival; Gary Thomas, Director, Animate Projects; and artist and music video director, David Wilson.

Submission guidelines: animateprojects.org/opportunities
Deadline for submissions: 10am, Monday 20 June 2011

The Animate OPEN exhibition will be online from July at animateprojects.org/films/by_project/digitalis/animate_open

The Animate OPEN is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Animation Blog - Begins May 25th

Created as a community driven blog highlighting Oregon's animation, visual effects, and digital media industry, the OregonAnimation.com blog premieres on May 25th.

Following the successful effort to create a voice for the Oregon Film and Television community in this blog, we recently convened a group of Oregon animation and visual effects professionals that we know, and asked them how a site dedicated to their segment of the industry might be received.  After lots of lively conversation and great ideas, it became clear that there was great interest, and that it would be very helpful for drawing attention to the fact that Oregon has more than just great locations, amazing acting and crew talent, and not to mention, a terrific film incentive program.

The National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture is pleased to announce that we will be holding a blog salon,Networking Artists: Rethinking Artist Services in the 21st Century from May 23rd - May 27th.

New media technologies have dramatically changed the way artists connect, produce and share their work. Social networking platforms and video hosting websites like YouTube have made it easier than ever for artists to build relationships and exhibit work across global networks. The many opportunities that come with this new digital economy based on sharing free work present new challenges for artists and the organizations that serve them. How can artists get paid their work? With the abundance of free content, how do artists connect with each other and engage with audiences? What role do organizations play as networkers, curators and advocates?

For one week, artists and arts leaders will dialogue about artist services as it's being practiced today. Each leader has invited artists who work with their organization to join the salon. We are hoping to create a dynamic conversation that will start at namac.org/idea-exchange and echo throughout the media arts community.

To follow the salon, go to http://www.namac.org/idea-exchange

Exhibit Opening: The Last Album

Exhibit: The Last Album: Eyes from the Ashes of Auschwitz-Birkenau
Opens: Friday, May 6th at 5:30 PM
Location: DIVA 280 W. Broadway

While on a group tour of Auschwitz as part of a diplomatic mission to Poland in 1986, Dr. Ann Weiss, curator of the exhibit and author of the book “The Last Album: Eyes from the Ashes of Auschwitz-Birkenau, was let into see an archive of family photos brought to the camp by victims of the Nazis.

Untouched and unseen since the liberation of the death camp in 1945, these poignant images immediately overwhelmed her. "I could not speak. I could barely breathe," she writes. "The familiar refrain ‘six million’ translated into six million times the individual, six million times Naftali and Raizele and Tzipohorah and Emanuel. Six million pairs of eyes." There before her were over 2,000 personal photographs confiscated from families and individuals.

The Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA) is pleased to bring this powerful exhibit of cherished personal photographs to Eugene. These are the memories of individuals and families that were carefully packed amongst their belongings and taken with them to the Auschwitz and Birkenau death camps.

This exhibit has toured extensively in the US, but has never been seen in the Pacific Northwest. The Eugene exhibit will include 75 photographs and maps curated personally by Ann Weiss. Dr. Weiss will travel with the exhibit from Atlanta, where it is currently on view, to give presentations about the photographs and her work in preserving these images. In addition, her film Eyes From the Ashes, based on her discovery and preservation of these photos, will be shown during the exhibit.

The exhibit will be on view through May and has been made possible by the generous support of local organizations, businesses, and individuals. We expect visitors from throughout the Pacific Northwest to visit this unique show. Read more.
