DIVA's New Poetry Series - July 28th

Jared Stanley is the author of The Weeds, Book Made of Forest, and four chapbooks, including How the Desert Did Me In. He is a member of the art collective Unmanned Minerals, and a co-editor of Mrs. Maybe. He lives in Reno, Nevada, where he is a Research Fellow at the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art.  Click2Read more about Jared Stanley.

David Abel's three new books are Float, a full-length collection of collage texts (Chax Press); Tether, a chapbook of poems (Bare bone books); and Carrier, a sequence of "hypergraphic" visual works (c_L). Cecelia Hagen is the author of Entering (Airlie Press, 2011) and of two chapbooks, Fringe Living (26 Books Press) and Among Others (Traprock Books). Her poetry, reviews, and nonfiction have been published by Rolling Stone, Prairie Schooner, Poet & Critic, Northwest Review, Caffeine Destiny, Blood Orange Review, Cream City Review, and many other publications. First Friday Art Walk at DIVA - July 6th

Eugene Art Events - July 4-8, 2012

The Maude Kerns Art Center presents two festivals in July this year at Eugene’s Alton Baker Park: July 4^th Music and the Vineyard with Freedom Festival Fireworks and the 29^th Annual Art and the Vineyard July 6th, 7th, and 8th. Comcast is the Title Sponsor of both events.

July 4^th Music and the Vineyard with Freedom Festival Fireworks: Gates open at 3:30pm. Music and the Vineyard features entertainment on the Main Stage, Oregon wineries, a beer garden, international food booths, and family-friendly activities, including races and games, a texting contest, and various Independence Day entertainment booths. The music line-up includes the alternative group My Father’s Ghost, unique jazz performer Halie Loren and Band, and the folk-funk sensation, the Laura Love Band with Orville Johnson. Music and the Vineyard is open through the Freedom Festival Fireworks. Admission is $7; children 6 – 11 years are $1; under 6 years are free. A Four-Day Discounted Pass that includes admission to the Art and the Vineyard Festival (July 6 – 8) is $20.

July 6^th, 7^th, and 8^th Art and the Vineyard Festival: Look for over 130 artists in the Artists’ Marketplace, over 30 artists in Art For Your Garden, and stellar performing artists on the Main Stage and Youth Stage. Headlining on the Main Stage are the popular covers group The Blue Valentines (Friday), indie pop singer Audrianna Cole (Saturday), and the Albany Swing Band (Sunday). Over 20 Oregon wineries offer wine tasting and the fine art of food preparation is demonstrated in the International Food Court. The Youth Art Arena features art activities for the young at heart, and artist demonstrations take place throughout the festival. Hours are 11:00am – 9:30pm on Friday and Saturday, and 11:00am – 6:30pm on Sunday. One-day admission is $7; children 6 – 11 years are $1; under 6 years are free. A three-day pass is $15.

This summer, DIVA's Behind the Lens will explore the uses of movie enchantment in the screening and discussion of fantasy and science fiction films.   Host Tom Blank has selected films that expanded his personal understanding of the potential of the screen to show the impossible, most of which were produced prior to the technical development of computer imagery. All films will be shown at the Baker Center, Tuesday evenings at 7 PM.  A discussion will follow each screening.

Poetry Series with Allison Cobb and Linda Russo

DIVA’s A New Poetry Series features authors Allison Cobb and Linda Russo in a presentation of their work at 7:30 PM on Friday, May 18th at DIVA 285 W. Broadway.  Donation welcome.

Allison Cobb is the author of Born2 (Chax Press, 2004) about her hometown of Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Green-Wood (Factory School, 2010) about a famous nineteenth-century cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. The New York Times called Green-Wood “a gorgeous, subtle, idiosyncratic gem.” She was a 2009 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow and received a 2011 Individual Artist Fellowship award from the Oregon Arts Commission. She works for the Environmental Defense Fund and lives in Portland, Oregon.

Linda Russo is the author of Mirth (Chax Press) and the recipient of fellowships at the Centrum Center for the Arts, the Ragdale Foundation, and the Millay Colony. Her essay "Precious, Rare, and Mundane" is the preface to Joanne Kyger's About Now: Collected Poems (National Poetry Foundation). She currently lives in the Columbia River Watershed, tending her community garden vegetable patch and teaching at Washington State University.

DIVA is please to be one of the sponsors of the ninth annual edition of The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival, which will take place in the Recital Hall at The Shedd in downtown Eugene during May 8-12, 2012. 

The award ceremony and reception will take place at DIVA on May 12.

DIVA announced the 2012 Teen Video Challenge Competition winners with a screening and awards ceremony on Saturday, April 14th at the Bijou Theater in Eugene. 

The festival’s Jury was please to recognize two first place winning videos this year. Festival Director Steve Newcomb made the awards before a packed theater.

South Eugene High School student Jordyn Roach won a $200 Jury First Place award for her claymation film Jovial Giraffes – a short video in which inanimate objects spring to life from a young boy's sketchpad. Jordyn also won a $50 Audience Choice award.

Adrian Tujillo also won a $200 Jury First place award for his video The Trumpet Player – a story about a young street musician who has a very special talent. Adrian is a student in Springfield’s Academy of Arts and Academics.

University of Oregon Cinema Studies major Samantha Stendal won the $100 Jury Third Place award for her film Diseased in which, after, an alarm rings, Ryan’s race for survival begins with the diseased close at his heels.
