Call for Artists – Public Art for Police Building

The Eugene, Oregon Police Art Committee is placing a call for artists for the future police headquarters at 300 Country Club.

Over the last two months a police art committee has been developing goals and a selection process for new art to be commissioned with the future police headquarters. This committee is responsible for the development, selection and implementation of an art project triggered by the City’s 1% for Art Ordinance. The overall art process is expected to take between nine months to one year and the initial project budget is $75,000. The focus of the public art is the within the public areas of the building only.

The Police Art Committee is seeking applicants with the ability to generate outstanding artistic concepts that are relevant to the department. The new art will strive to create a memorable and welcoming building and be a timeless, proud celebration of the positive connections between EPD and the community. The goals of the artwork are as follows:

Goal 1) Celebrate and affirm the spirit of service for EPD staff, volunteers and officers.

Concepts supporting this goal will serve as positive daily affirmations for officers and staff who have dedicated themselves to protect and serve. These reminders will provide an ideal to reach for every day as people enter and exit the grounds.

Goal 2) Support the people who are served by EPD. Concepts achieving this goal will support people who need the services of EPD after experiencing something very difficult and at times horrible. The artwork should provide positive reminders of care and affirmations of strength while helping create a welcoming, trusting, dignified environment.

The committee is composed of Sergeant Angie San Miguel, Officer Dale Dawson, Dimitri Von Klein (photographer), Joe Moore (Public Art Committee member), Charly Prichard (Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art chief preparatory), Mike Penwell (City of Eugene design and construction manager), Kari Turner (PIVOT architect), and Isaac Marquez (City of Eugene public art manager).

Call for film submissions: 2012 OpenLens Festival

(Eugene, Oregon) The 2012 OpenLens Festival seeks submissions by Oregon filmmakers for its eighth annual celebration of the short film genre to be held in Eugene January 28-29, 2012.  Prizes include: $500 Jury Award, $200 Jury Honorable Mention, and $100 Audience Choice Award. Submissions are limited to 15 minutes with films 10 minutes or less preferred.

Oregon resident filmmakers are encouraged to submit their best work to what has become Eugene’s premier winter film festival hosted by the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts (DIVA).  The deadline for entries is 5pm, Friday, December 2, 2011. Submission form and entry requirements are available online at: openlens.proscenia.net.

DIVA’s annual Youth Visions Film Festival, usually held in conjunction with the OpenLens Festival, will be celebrated as its own unique event early in the spring.

LCC - DAVID JOYCE GALLERY - REQUEST FOR WINTER EXHIBIT PROPOSALS

The David Joyce Gallery at Lane Community College is pleased to announce a Request for Proposals for the Winter Term Exhibit "Red, Red the Color of Warm" to continue the Color Theory theme for the 2011-12 exhibit year!

Attached is the Request for Proposal that contains all the information if you consider a submission. 

If you are an artist who has previously submitted works for consideration for this year's winter and spring shows, we have your submission on file and will review with the Gallery Committee when all other entries are received by Monday, November 7.

The Basics: Nuno Felting Workshop

Saturday, October 1 or Sunday, November 13

9am-noon

Learn all about nuno feltmaking - the art of fusing silk and cotton fabric and wool fiber.   We will go through a couple of exercises to become familiar with what fabrics work best and play nicely with different types of wool.   You'll also learn techniques for blending color, adding texture effects and leave class ready to try your own projects at home.  No experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun, rollup your sleeves and get a little damp in the process.

Nuno Scarf Workshop

Saturday, October 15 

9am-1pm

Wrap yourself in a beautiful, warm, hand felted scarf that you create using the nuno felt techniques. Learn the basics of nuno felting using luxurious silk, merino wool and other beautiful fibers to create your own beautiful soft scarf.  No experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun, rollup your sleeves and get a little damp in the process.                                                                                                                           

Fee: $65.00 plus $20 materials & supplies

24 Hour Comics Day - Sign up now!

DIVA to host 24 Hour Comics Day. On October 1st, starting at Noon, DIVA will host a 24 Hour Comic challenge to artists to create a complete 24 page comic in 24 hours. "Celebrity" participants, so far, include nationally recognized artist David Chelsea and Eugene's own Ken O'Connell. Participation is free, but pre-registration is required to guarantee a spot, as space is limited.  DIVA will feature Chelsea's works in their October exhibit.
   Portland artist David Chelsea, a record holder for 24 Hour Comics,  will be participating, and is featured in DIVA's October Gallery Exhibit.
