Second International Visual Research Methods Conference

Register now for the Second International Visual Research Methods Conference, to be held at The Open University in Milton Keynes, UK, 13-15 September 2011.

This innovative and exciting conference covers the use of visual methods in research with presentations and commentaries by social scientists and practitioners including visual artists and photographers. It boasts an impressive mix of around 150 papers from international speakers, six film screenings, six exhibitions, several hands-on workshops, book launches, and an opportunity to visit the MK Gallery and speak with local artists.

Filmmaker Katerina Cizek - Canadian documentary filmmaker whose digital revolution work has won a host of awards and National Film Board of Canada's Filmmaker-in-Residence at an inner city hospital

Professor Carey Jewitt  - educationalist from the London Knowledge Lab, Institute of Education, specialising in visual and multimodal theory and research methods, technologies in teaching and learning and video based research.

Professor Ludmilla Jordanova - historian at Kings College London specialising in historian's use of visual and material culture.

Our modern communication offer great possibilities and enable us to reach any point in the world just by a click. To get in contact is easy, to become part of communities as well and to share interests, opinions and worries, no problem. But how does our neighborhood change during these times? City marketing and advertising determine what we get to see around us, varied codes of conduct regulate what to do and not to do. Public space has been increasingly functionalized and freed from any intimacy. We are exposing us in social networks, but we don't find a public place with a personal touch. During the study we will use a variety of techniques and exercises to focus perception of our own personality and the surrounding. We are developing skills to communicate in a concrete way with body and actions, and transform these into a performative work.

The presentation of this study will be shown as part of the Global Communication Festival for Performance Art 2011.

Global Communication is an international Festival of Performance art. The focus in this year will be the notion of public spaces and site specific works.

19 Adam Chodzko: Something in the Water; A Search for the Turn of the Backwash

Where’s the art work? The residency and its location is the work. The group is the work. The differencesbetween the group is the work. But the group is looking somewhere else altogether. And that somewhere else — certainly, not here — must be where art is really about to happen.

We would start, perhaps, by considering the Banffness of it all, looking for answers, and questions, in the background of the 1945 National Film Board production about The Banff School of Fine Arts,Holiday at School. Then we might wonder why Alberta became one of the few places in the world that successfully eradicated the Norwegian rat? And therefore consider the status of photography now, had not the Banff photography program gone missing for 10 years after a fire in 1979. This might lead us to the creation of a concert with Gnawa musicians. Or we could decide to transfer all decision-making for the group to a committee based in the city of Beppu, Japan.

Based on research and experimentation through play, improvisation, and the use of chance, this residency will explore the methodologies of ethnographic film maker Jean Rouch, that looking catalyses a particular reality. And, Grotowski’s notion that actors co-create the event of theatre with its spectators might provide some guidance. Moving between media we will, as a group, develop processes which question the role of vision in how we encounter each other and the social spaces beyond us. The carnivalesque, the everyday, magic, documentary, the surreal, the archive, ritual, reflexivity, and the pragmatic will help us out.

It’s a collaboration. Each participant contributing equally, sharing authorship. Whilst there’ll be plenty of opportunity for individual studio practice we’ll navigate this residency through field trips, hikes, meetings with “real” people, collaborative video projects, individual quests, a lot of “show and tell,” too much late night Googling, coincidences and misunderstandings, all tempered with the enjoyment of the potential to be found in getting radically lost.

€500 for Best Re-Use of an Urban Object or Area

To encourage and celebrate resourcefulness in the city, EXCHANGE RADICAL MOMENTS! Live Art Festival is awarding a prize for the most innovative re-use of an urban object or area for a new purpose.

From telephone boxes being re-used as tree planters to street signs being used as musical instruments , the urban landscape is no longer the end of a creative process, but the beginning. The city has become source material and urban residents around the world are finding new uses for the existing infrastructure of their city.

Do you have an idea for how an object or area in the city could be put to better use than the one it was originally designed for? Have you seen or created an alternate use for something in the city? Please submit your photos, images and ideas below for a chance to win €500 as well as having your work published and exhibited.

The GO11 Award is a €500 prize for the best examples of re-using existing objects and areas of the city for a new purpose. The winning entry will receive €500, and will be presented in the festival magazine, published October 2011. Winning and shortlisted entries will also be presented as part of the Exchange Radical Moments festival in Berlin on 11/11/11. Additional judging and contest details can be found below. Documentary Filmmaker Retreat

August 26 – 28 join the Seattle Documentary Association for DocForest, a documentary filmmaker's retreat at the Kitsap Forest Theater. The weekend retreat – formerly known as DocFarm – will be filled with guided peer-to-peer workshops, documentary films, camaraderie, bonfires, and great food. Recharge your creative spirit at this breath-taking environment in the woods!

The weekend kickoffs Friday evening with a Happy Hour followed by Rapid Recharge – an event where we show YOUR favorite, brain tingling, jaw dropping, inspiring clips. We will show five minutes of any genre of film you bring!

During workshops discover the myths of distribution; practice pitching your dream project and honing your idea; and explore the ethics of documentary filmmaking and the elements of storytelling.

Bring SHORT CLIPS for our Saturday evening Works-in-Progress (no longer than 10 minutes) and for our Rapid Recharge event on Friday (no longer than 5 minutes).

DocForest events end Sunday at 2pm so you'll have plenty of time to continue to enjoy this historic site and head home.

Sleeping accommodations are available on site where you can bunk with other people in the cabin or bring a tent and camp. If you prefer to sleep offsite there are hotels nearby.

About Kitsap Forest Theater
The Mountaineers Kitsap property, including the Kitsap Forest Theater, is located approximately 7 miles west of downtown Bremerton in unincorporated Kitsap County. Part of the 460-acre Rhododendron Preserve owned and maintained by the Mountaineers Foundation, the property is home to Kitsap Cabin, built in 1918 by mostly women volunteers during WWI. It is listed on the Washington Heritage Register as a historically significant site.

Kinetica Art Fair, is the UK's only art fair specialising in Kinetic, Electronic, Robotic, Sound, Light, time-based and multi-disciplinary New Media Art, science and technology.

The Fair is produced by Kinetica Museum and provides collectors, curators and the public with a unique opportunity to view and purchase artworks from leading international galleries, artists collectives, curatorial groups and organisations specialising in Kinetic, Electronic, Digital and cutting edge New Media Art.

Alongside the Fair, Kinetica curate a programme of special events, performances, talks, screenings, tours and workshops. These events involve some of the world's most eminent leaders in the most experimental and exciting realms of art, science and technology.

The fair has been held annually since 2009, at Ambika P3, one of London's most exciting exhibition spaces and dynamic venues.

Kinetica Art Fair 2012 will take place from the 9th - 12th February.

NORTHWEST FILMMAKERS' FESTIVAL

NOVEMBER 11-19, 2011

ENTRY DEADLINE, AUGUST 1, 2011 (POSTMARK)

If you haven't heard, the Northwest Film & Video Festival has changed its name to The Northwest Filmmakers' Festival and I am looking for your best recent work for our 38th year of celebrating you. I am hoping you have something for me-or know someone who does.

The NW Filmmakers Festival only accepts work made by filmmakers living in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington State.

If you are a permanent resident of any of these, this Festival is for you. 

And it's not just "for you" in the sense that your work is eligible.

The whole festival is actually for you.

What do I mean?

• We do not charge an entry fee.
• All entries are considered for other screening opportunities at the Northwest Film Center including the Portland International Film Festival and our Northwest Tracking series.
• All selected short films will be eligible to join the "Best of the 38th Northwest Film & Video Festival" touring program that screens at venues large and small from Alaska to Tennessee and many points in between.
• Filmmakers whose work is selected are eligible to receive Production Services Awards worth $1000 or more from regional sponsoring companies like Alpha Cine, Digital One, Modern Digital and Koerner Cameras.
• If your work is selected, you'll get a Festival Pass for all events including the Opening Night Gala and, of course, invigorating and inspirational hours of screenings made by you and your comrades. Out of town guests will be put up in one of our sponsoring hotels.
• All filmmakers of the Northwest are invited to the Festival's free BarCamp un-conference where attendees set the agenda and lead discussions on all aspects of filmmaking-sharing their areas of expertise with each other.
• Every filmmaker who enters eligible work is offered two free tickets to Festival screenings regardless of whether they are selected or not.
• Did I mention that we do not charge an entry fee?

The entry deadline is August 1 (postmark) but be a pal and send it along as soon as you can.  I personally watch all the entries and would love to get a running start at it.

The School of Art, Design & Printing Dublin Institute of Technology is offering a suite of Masters programmes specifically designed for honours graduates in fine art, multimedia, design, architecture and humanities. It has been developed by the School in collaboration with the Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media (www.gradcam.ie) which delivers a structured Doctoral programme. The programme is centered around the development and delivery of a major project which can be either practice or theory based. Key features of this approach are the integrated delivery of Masters and Doctoral research methods as well as a special series of lectures providing a survey of key ideas in the study of contemporary cultural practice.

The programme combines the self-directed ethos of graduate academic research with the structured environment of a taught programme. Drawing on the diverse research and scholarly activity by staff in the School and the activities of GradCAM it aims to nurture and support an interdisciplinary approach to research and development within art, design and critical theory. This dynamic environment seeks to provide a framework for critical interdisciplinary dialogue and enquiry that facilitates, promotes and leads the interaction between cultural practice, educational practice and the everyday world of work and innovation beyond the academy.

The programme allows specialisation within a dynamic mix of critical and practical disciplines in art, design and/or critical theory – realised within the context of critical and philosophical debate. The series of thematic streams on offer will reflect the current practice, scholarly and research activity of staff and will be available to students in the Project Initiation, Project Development and Project Delivery modules. Initially, the following thematic streams will be offered:
